  • ...farewell :(...

'tis be my last day here...last night was overwhelmingly emotional for me, but i really held back haha.  i cried for maybe like 30 seconds because i didn't want to kill the party mood.  i'm going to miss this place...like c r a z y...the kids...oy, the kids!!!  what am i going to do when i get back??

anyway, please pray for these kids that they won't yearn for me too much ahahahaha just kidding...the other way around actually...that i don't suffer from withdrawal.  but do pray for these kids, that they will have continued faith in God and that it will only grow.

it's been an incredibly invaluable experience for me, namsan won.  thank you for your patience, your acceptance, and your great company.  i've learned more than i bargained for and will never take my lessons learned for granted.

    God bless~

  • We're on YouTube!

Amy, Grace and I made a video that was supposed to be shown at the beginning of the summer camp, but it ended up being shown at the end! hehe
I've posted it to YouTube and we hope you enjoy it!

Basically it's a bit of a parody on the morning wakeup call that the kids receive at 6:30.
The 국장님 (Director?) calls out the kids names on the PA system in the morning.. ;)

  • Our time is winding down..

Already a month has passed since I came to Namsanwon!
The time has passed so quickly :)

Things have been in a bit of a lull after the camp finished, it seems like it's the last stretch before we all return to our respective homes. We haven't been teaching English much during the past few weeks because of the camp and also the kids going to church camps all this week.

I came here thinking that I'd be doing some hardcore English teaching, but it didn't exactly turn out quite the way that I thought it would. It's been a lot of spending time with the kids and helping out with manual labour at the home! :) But it's been good, I've not only gotten to know the children, but also the teachers as well. As I thought about leaving next week, I think I'll miss these kids.. Usually I'm quite cold about saying goodbye and not very emotional, but next week we'll see what happens.. hehe

One thing that I've noticed is that the children here are given many opportunities in terms of culture and learning things. I was surprised at the number of people that come here to teach the children and also at the number of events put on for the children by companies and organizations. All these are really great things, but more than anything these kids need to know that they are loved.

I think that's probably the hardest thing for a person working with these children. Basically we as volunteers and also the staff here are functioning as parental figures. Many of the kids are in the home because of domestic violence, even victims themselves. The scars that they carry are often quite deep and even in the kids faces you can see their pain.

I know it all sounds very depressing and discouraging, but we have a love that never runs dry and never fails. We must be vessels for His love and be continually filled in order to give to the children. And so there is hope! Hope that comes not from ourselves, but that comes from the promises of God. He promises that if we open our mouths wide, He will fill it. (Ps. 81:10). Jesus has overcome the world and so we stand on what He has done.

All we can do is pray and serve these children. It's not comfortable but there is a joy it :)

I know my post has been a bit disjointed, but thank you for bearing with me :)

    God bless!

    DSC02345

hahaha last night...what did you expect from the boys hahaha

I experienced a lot of love and anger throughout the camp.  It was truly a test of my patience.  At times I really wanted to yell at these kids for having lack of respect or for just being irresponsible, but at the end of the day I got to love these kids more than anything.  The kids were so dedicated to representing their teams and really looked out for each other.  And as a part of a team, I got closer to kids I rarely spoke to and discovered what amazing spirits they each have.  They may seem unmovtivated at times, but with the right amount of oomf, they give it their all.

Thank God for keeping us all safe and bringing Namsan Won together as a big family.  I pray for these kids to have that kind of passion they had during the camp and apply it to their daily lives.  If they do, there's nothing they can't achieve.

  • Summer camp time

We're having a very intense 4 night, 5 day camp here filled with skits, manual work, games, etc. You basically spend time with your group of twenty people 24/7. It's a good opportunity to really spend time with the kids. But that also means absolutely zero private time. Yikes.

I am kind of worried since the director said she wanted us to stay with the kids for Sunday morning too when we asked her if we can go to church. AGhhh.

This camp is going to test my patience for sure because I need solitude.

We need God's strength to pull through! Pray for us.

    Amy
